Two evaluation questions matter for a contractor combining service work and longer commercial projects. These are operator judgments, not a survey of every platform.
The first is a gap in the middle of the market. Residential SMB work is well served by the truck-roll platforms. Pure commercial work is served by the enterprise field-service platforms. The largest enterprise platform does both, but at enterprise scale and price. The workflow to test closely is the family-owned mid-market contractor that does both residential and commercial, often with AIA billing, prevailing wage, and certified payroll on the commercial side and quick service calls on the residential side. A category label alone does not prove that a platform covers that mix. That mix changes the acceptance test: sample both a service job and a progress-billed project before assuming one workflow covers the business.
The second question concerns the report population. A useful native report can still answer a different question from the one the owner is asking. An operator may use a BI tool like Power BI or request a CSV export so they can build the view themselves. It is not incompetence. It is that every contractor runs the business slightly differently, different cost cuts, different commission math, different definitions of a “job”, so the report must disclose its definitions. For a WIP review, carry the opening position, monthly movements and ending asset or liability separately; a current account balance alone cannot explain earned revenue or prior-period treatment.
Put the two together and you get the through-line of this whole section: the software is not where the value is stuck. The value is stuck in the seams, between segments a platform was not built for, and between the data a platform holds and the specific numbers an owner needs. Whoever closes those seams, by knowing the systems deeply and assembling the data into the few numbers that matter, captures the value the platforms leave on the table.

- Test a service job and a progress-billed project rather than assume one workflow covers both.
- Carry WIP opening, movements and ending asset or liability in the same review.
- Name the cost and invoice date definitions before comparing report totals.
